About BrightUp Kids

We build welcoming programs where young children and their families learn together.

Our story

BrightUp Kids began with a group of parents, educators, and researchers who kept noticing the same gap: plenty of enrichment exists for young children, but very little of it is bilingual and genuinely built for families learning together.

What started as a handful of Mandarin story sessions at a local library has grown into a set of programs running across the MetroWest area and the Bay Area — story time, language classes, a travelling book exchange, and a parent–child reading club.

We remain small and volunteer-driven by design. It keeps us close to the families we serve.

We are also research-led. The board that governs us includes a professor, a Director of Empirical Research, and several PhDs, and that lens shapes how every program is designed. In 2026 that work took a name of its own: BrightUp Institute, our research division.

Our mission

At BrightUp Kids, we believe in the transformative power of community and education. We strive to provide comprehensive resources and support that cater to the developmental needs of children, enabling them to thrive in a diverse and dynamic world.

What guides us

  • Open to every family

No child should miss out on early enrichment. We design every program so that any family in our community can take part.

  • Families learn together

We design for parents and children in the same room, not drop-off classes. Language sticks when it is shared.

  • Bilingual by default

Our programs treat Mandarin, Spanish, and English as equally worth a child’s time.

  • Open about our money

We publish where donations go. Families supporting us deserve to see what their contribution covered.

What children make

Every piece here was made by a child at one of our sessions.

  • A rabbit made of overlapping painted dots in pink, orange, and yellow
  • A red sponge-stencil print of two rabbits beneath a full moon, a Mid-Autumn Festival motif
  • Two hand-coloured paper lanterns with cut sides and woven handles
  • A flower made of glued red and black beans, with a stem of green mung beans
  • A cardboard fish coloured in blue, red, and green marker, with a googly eye
